50th anniversary of Kyocera’s jewellery business

Kyoto/London − Kyocera Corporation announced that their jewelry business, which was born from the application of their crystal growth technology, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
Kyocera began developing gemstones by applying the crystal growth technology cultivated through the production of fine ceramics and succeeded in growing emeralds in 1975. At that time, natural gemstones were sold at high prices despite a shortage of high-quality rough stones, making them difficult for the average person to purchase. Kyocera’s founder, Kazuo Inamori, wanted to recreate the original beauty of gemstones – something increasingly difficult to find in nature – through crystal growth technology and provide people with the joy of wearing jewellery. This led to the launch of the jewellery business and the successful development of lab-grown gemstones with identical chemical, physical, and optical properties to natural stones.
Half a century after the launch of the business, Kyocera now offers 12 types of gemstones*1, including sapphire and ruby, under the “CRESCENT VERT”*2 brand. The collection is highly regarded both in Japan and internationally, with a 25% increase in sales in the fiscal year ending March 2025.
In recent years, there has been a growing movement toward “ethical consumption,” in which consumers consider not only the intrinsic value of products but also their manufacturing and procurement methods, taking into account environmental and social factors. Natural gemstones have been criticized for issues such as harsh working conditions during deep underground mining and resource depletion due to mining. Meanwhile, Kyocera’s gemstones, cultivated in controlled environments, are increasingly recognized as a responsible and ethical alternative.
As a pioneer of lab-grown gemstones, Kyocera will continue to contribute to the environment and society, enrich lives, and deliver ethical gemstones to the world.
