Customised solutions for wastewater neutralisation

Kyoto/London - For more than 25 years, Kyocera's Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld site has been known for producing solutions for wastewater neutralization and exhaust air purification. The FRIDURIT brand in particular offers excellent capabilities for the treatment of exhaust air and wastewater from chemical laboratories.

FRIATEC developed the FRIDURIT C100 neutralisation system in the 1990s as a compact and easy-to-integrate neutralisation system that set new standards in terms of safety thanks to its innovative mixing-pumping system and its hose-free supply of dosing chemicals. This well-engineered, tried-and-tested product was continued following the sale of the laboratory technology division to the KYOCERA Group and, thanks to a growing range of accessories, is also able to realise individual solutions cost-effectively.

One example of this is a disposal solution for wastewater from a chemical laboratory in Karlsruhe that was built as an interim laboratory in container design. Given the particularities of the construction, the wastewater from the discharge points must be pumped via chemical-proof lifting units to a central neutralisation unit where it can be disposed of into the local sewer system after treatment with an acid or alkali while complying with the permitted pH limits.

To ensure that the wastewater disposal system operates smoothly, a buffer volume of 500 litres was required between the lifting units and the neutralisation system, thereby ensuring that in normal operation there is no need to interrupt the normal laboratory disposal during wastewater treatment. The challenge here was the limited space of around 1.5 m² that was allocated for the installation of the buffer tank and the neutralisation system.

The designers in Mannheim resolved this issue with a customised container in panel design, which both provides sufficient buffer volume and serves as an installation area for the neutralisation system. The container was installed inside a safety tank in accordance with the applicable regulations. The wastewater is pumped from the container to the neutralisation unit by means of a self-priming pump and, after treatment, is fed directly into the wastewater pipe. The entire solution was pre-assembled by the manufacturer, which meant that the system could be installed in just a few hours.
